Smokey Quartz gains its enigmatic colouring through natural radiation, which activates the aluminium inclusions within the quartz. It is a universally prevalent stone across cultures, being regarded a sacred stone in Celtic culture, thought to guide souls through to the afterlife, as well as a stone to signify the Greek goddess of magic, Hecate. A grounding stone, Smokey Quartz is believed to offer a sense of stability and security in times of adversity.
