While it may present a black pigment upon initial glance, Hematite is infact a very dark red iron oxide, with its name deriving from the Greek word ‘haima’, for blood. Its rich, deep colouration has traditionally been used as a source of paint pigment, and its brilliant metallic lustre when polished, made for ancient mirrors. It is metaphysically recognised as being a stone of healing, and protection, alleviating fears and fostering tranquil stability.
